Cycling with the Big Five: A Safari on Two Wheels

Adventure

By Red Dirt Uganda · Published on February 2026 • 3 min read

Most safari stories begin with an engine starting. This one begins with pedals. We entered Murchison Falls at first light on mountain bikes, moving quietly through dust and grass while the park woke up around us. No windows, no metal shell, just open air and the immediate awareness that we were part of the landscape, not observers behind glass.

Why a cycling safari in Uganda feels different

On a bike, every meter is physical. You feel the trail under your tires, hear insects in the grass, and notice wind direction the way wildlife does. Rangers brief strictly before departure because safety is non negotiable in big game habitat. That structure is what makes the experience possible and responsible.

"Cycling safari is not about speed. It is about awareness, discipline, and respect for wild space."

We rode in tight formation with a ranger, slowing whenever visibility narrowed. The first major sighting was a giraffe group crossing ahead of us, then stopping to watch with calm curiosity. Later came buffalo in shade and warthogs running with tails upright like little flags. The park felt close enough to touch.

Safety realities every rider should know

Cycling near wildlife always requires park approved guiding and ranger support. Animal behavior changes quickly, especially around breeding groups and calves. Riders must follow command signals immediately and keep formation discipline. This is adventure, but it is managed adventure.

Where cycling safaris are possible in Uganda

Lake Mburo is widely known for ranger supported cycling and is often ideal for first timers. In selected other parks, cycling can be arranged through approved operators under strict protocol. Route access depends on season, wildlife movement, and park authority guidance.

Who should add this to their itinerary

If you enjoy active travel and want more than standard game drives, cycling safari is one of the best adventure upgrades in Uganda. It pairs well with gorilla trekking and river activities, creating a route that feels dynamic without becoming chaotic.
